機器設定用のWindowsノートが有りますので、自宅でインターネットにつないでみることにしましたが
どうにも接続がうまくいきませんでしたので、最初からやり直すことにしました。
自分は枯れたシステムが好きですのでバージョンはXPのSP3です。
LANからのインターネット接続ですので、検索語句は「インターネット 接続設定 Windows LAN」で
ここから引用しました。
インターネットプロトコル（TCP/IP）の確認とIPアドレスの設定
Windows XPはじめに・・・
ケーブルモデムをパソコンに接続して使用するには ネットワークインタフェースカード（LANボードやLANカード）がインストール済のパソコンを使用する必要がございます。その後TCP/IPプロトコルを導入して各自のIPアドレスを認識させる必要があります。
これ以降の説明ではすでにネットワークインタフェースカードがパソコンに正しくインストールされていることを前提にしています。
Windows XPネットワーク設定
１．「スタート」から「コントロールパネル」を選択してください。
２．「ネットワークとインターネット接続」を選択してください。
３．「ネットワーク接続」を選択してください。
４．お使いのLANアダプタ名の「ローカルエリア接続」のアイコンを右クリックし「プロパティ」を選択してください。
※LANボード・LANカード名についてはLANボード・LANカードの取扱説明書をご参照ください。LANアダプタが内蔵されている場合はパソコンの取扱説明書を ご参照いただくかパソコンメーカーへお問合せください。
５．「全般」のタブの「インターネットプロトコル（TCP/IP）」を選択し「プロパティ」をクリックします。
６．「IPアドレスを自動的に取得する」及び「DNSサーバーのアドレスを自動的に取得する」にチェックを入れます。
OKボタンを押して画面を閉じてください。
７．「1.〜3.の操作」を再度行います。「インターネットオプション」を選択しインターネットプロパティ画面の「接続」のタブの「LANの設定」を選択してください。
８．「設定を自動的に検出する」「自動構成スクリプトを使用する」「LANにプロキシサーバーを使用する」「ローカルアドレスにはプロキシサーバーを使用しない」のチェックをはずします。
ＯＫボタンを押して画面を閉じてください。

※システムの設定変更を行いますので必ずアドミニストレータ（Administrator）でログオンしてください。
インターネットプロトコル（TCP/IP）の確認

５． 図のように「インターネットプロトコル（TCP/IP）のプロパティ」画面が表示されます。 ここで「IPアドレスを自動的に取得する」および「DNSサーバーのアドレスを自動的に取得する」を「オン」にし「OK」をクリックしてください。

「ネットワーク」コントロールパネルを閉じると必要に応じてWindows CD-ROMからファイルが読み込まれWindowsを再起動するよう促されます。

１．Windowsのコントロールパネルを開き「ネットワーク」のアイコンをダブルクリック
してネットワークの設定を確認してください。
２．[ネットワークの設定]のタグから 「TCP/IP－＞ (LANアダプタの名称)」または
「TCP/IP」を選択し[プロパティ] をクリックします。 「TCP/IP」の項目が見つ
からない場合はTCP/IPプロトコルの導入をする必要があります。
前項の説明に戻ってTCP/IPプロトコルをWindowsに導入してください。
３．「ＩＰアドレス」タグをクリックします。 「IPアドレスを自動的に取得」にチェックをします。
４．「ゲートウェイ」タグをクリックします。 ゲートウェイになにも設定 されていないことを確認します。
５．「ＤＮＳ設定」タグをクリックします。 「ＤＮＳを使わない」にチェックします。
６．以上の設定が終了したら「ＴＣＰ／ＩＰのプロパティ」画面の「ＯＫ」ボタンをクリックします。
７．「ネットワーク」画面の「ＯＫ」ボタンをクリックします。
８．必要に応じてWindows CD-ROMからファイルが読み込まれWindowsを再起動 するよう
促されます。変更した設定を有効にするに「はい」ボタンを押して再起動 します。
以上でネットワークの設定は終了です。

Macintoshネットワークの設定
MacintoshでのTCP/IPの設定にはOpenTransportまたはMacTCPという機能を 使用します。OSのバージョン等により若干設定方法が違う場合がありますがここで 説明するものはMacOS 7.6以降に適応されます。
以降の画面は英語で書かれていますが日本語でも似たような画面が出てきますので 英語の書かれている場所を日本語に置き換えてお読み下さい。
１．画面の左上のアップルメニューより「コントロールパネル」→「TCP/IP」を選んで
TCP/IPコントロールパネルを開きます。その後「編集」メニューから「User Mode…」
を選びます。
２．「Basic」を選択し「OK」ボタンをクリックします。
３．Connect via（経由先）を「Ethernet」Configure（設定方法）を「Using DHCP Server」
にします。 「IPアドレス(IP Address)」「サブネットマスク(Subnet mask)」「ルーター アドレス
(Router address)」「ネームサーバーアドレス(Name server addr.)」の項目に は
「will be supplide by server」と表示されます。
４．TCP/IP設定画面の左上にある「閉じる」ボタンをクリックします。
設定を保存してネットワークの設定は終了です。
しかし、ほとんどの設定をウィザードで行いますので、エラー無く設定が完了すれば
それはそれで便利なのでしょうが、ひとたびエラーが発生し、つまずくとその解決には
相当な時間がかかります。自動設定も善し悪しかなと思います。
上記は2006年時点の設定手順だそうですが、OSのバージョンによっては少しずつ違います。
エラーになった場合の手順がいずれもわかりにくいと思います。
私も未だにネットワークにつながらない原因が分からず、苦労しています。
